The Tjalling C. Koopmans Institute is the research institute and research school of USE, Utrecht School of Economics at Utrecht University. The institute was founded in 2003. Some 40 fellows, most of whom are associated with one or more of the chairs at USE, participate in the institute's research and Ph.D. programmes. The director of the institute is professor Hans Schenk. Board: prof. dr. Hans Schenk (director), prof. dr. Joop Schippers, dr. Stephanie Rosenkranz, dr. Wolter Hassink, drs. Jordan Otten Secretariat: Mw. mr. J. de Swart-Gijsberts, managing officer; mw. S. Mook-Korver, secretary.
The Koopmans Institute stimulates and facilitates fundamental and applied research in the economics of markets and institutions, including research that crosses borders between economics on one hand and geography, history, law, sociology and social-psychology on the other. Since economics is ultimately meant to improve decision making in government, businesses, and other organisations, the institute also facilitates research that crosses the usually rather strict separation of economics proper from business economics. Research facilities include the usual array of computing facilities, databases, and secretarial support.
For early dissemination of research results, and to enhance discussion with colleagues, the Koopmans Institute publishes results of ongoing research in a discussion paper series.
To stimulate discussion and interaction the Koopmans Institute organises seminars every week, in which fellows, including Ph.D. students, and visitors are offered the opportunity to present and discuss their ongoing work. International scholars visit the Koopmans Institute to collaborate and to discuss their work, while researchers may visit the institute on a short-term basis or as post-doctoral fellows on a long-term basis.
