The N.W. Posthumus Instituut is the Netherlands research institute and research school for economic and social history. The institute coordinates the research of all scholars who are working in this field in the Netherlands and the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. It runs a national PhD program and 6 interdisciplinary research programs. The institute has a strong international orientation and is responsible for the bureau of the European graduate school ESTER and for the secretariat of the International Economic History Association. The N.W. Posthumus Instituut is supported by 15 faculties and institutes in the Netherlands and Belgium with over 100 research fellows and 60 PhD students

SOM is the joint research school of the faculties of Management & Organization and Economics at the University of Groningen. It combines and stimulates disciplinary and interdisciplinary research meeting international standards. And it provides the training and research environment for PhD students. In 2004, approximately 125 research fellows and 70 PhD students belonged to SOM. SOM was recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts Sciences in May 1998. This accreditation has been renewed in 2003.

The mission of SOM is to stimulate monodisciplinary and interdisciplinary research related to the firm in its economic environment
