BACKGROUND

The 1st Workshop on Moral Foundations of Management Knowledge, held in Cergy-Pontoise, France, on October 13-14, 2006 was a great success.

The papers presented at the 1st workshop will be published in a forthcoming collection entitled
‘Moral Foundations of Management Knowledge’ edited by Marie-Laure Djelic & Radu Vranceanu
& published by Edward Elgar.

This shows the increasing importance of the ethical discussions of management knowledge.
The 2nd workshop on Moral Foundations of Management Knowledge aims to continue the fruitful discussions initiated at the first workshop, and seeks to both re-invite last years participants as well as attract new participants.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Current management literature emphasizes the importance of management knowledge and claims that we live in a knowledge society. Knowledge has become the most important production factor for organizations, and therefore a central competitive factor on the market. In light of the increasing importance of knowledge, the question of how to organize and manage knowledge becomes a central one. This raises new ethical questions regarding managerial behaviour, as well as some central ethical questions about the value, ownership and use of knowledge itself.

This workshop therefore calls for contributions that investigate the theoretical aspects of the ways in which management knowledge incorporates an ethical dimension. The main goal is to raise questions of the underlying moral and ethical foundations of those bodies of knowledge. What is the conception of human nature/subjectivity and social reality implied and embedded in business ethics theories? What are the moral or ethical dilemmas and debates inherent in the discourse on management knowledge? How do different approaches to business ethics influence the development of research and knowledge in those various subfields? And how does moral practice affect managerial decisions? How can we approach the often preconceived moral notions regarding management knowledge?

In asking these questions we are not only trying to investigate how society can support the emergence of more sustainable and responsible systems, norms, incentives and behaviours, but also how different approaches to ethical and moral theory underpin management knowledge and influence managerial decisions and behaviour in general. The workshop thereby encourages interdisciplinary work and welcomes theoretical and empirical papers that draw insights and approaches from a wide range of disciplines combining ethics, morality and management knowledge.

Contributors might consider the following themes:

• Intellectual ethical history: the evolution and transformation of particular disciplines, with emphasis on both the philosophical and sociological dimension
• Ethical questioning of the knowledge economy
• Corporate social responsibility
• Questioning of the internal ‘objective stands’ to management knowledge
• Different ethical takes on disciplinary knowledge
• New control technologies, strategies and disciplinary effects
• Collective organizational (ethical?) practices and individual managerial values
• The impact of implicit ethical assumptions on managerial tools and practices
• Deconstruction of bodies of knowledge: unearthing implicit moral foundations
• Differences between ethics and morality; the unethical and immorality
• The moral “versus” the immoral in management knowledge?
• Managerial morality as reason or emotions?
• Moralizing discourse in management knowledge
• Moralization as ideological managerial practice
• The intertwining of power and knowledge and its ethical implications

The list is far from complete and indicative only, and we will welcome any paper which approaches the topic critically and reflectively.

Selection will be made on the basis of Extended Abstracts (2-3 pages).
Full and final papers should be about 20-25 pages, A4, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman 12 and in English.
