IFSAM: The International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management | | What is IFSAM?
What does IFSAM do?
What are the benefits of being a member of IFSAM?
What are IFSAM’s aims?
IFSAM (International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management) strives to become a UN (United Nations) for all worldwide academies of management. This ambitious goal can also be found in the statutes of IFSAM (article 1):
“The objects of the Federation shall be the development of management research and teaching as a unified science and its advancement in all nations of the world. Means to this end shall be determined by the Federation in the manner outlined herein and shall include:
· |
promoting the development of specific parts of management research and teaching and encouraging the development of new fields, |
· |
establishing and maintaining standards of competence in management research and teaching, |
· |
sponsoring international conferences, |
· |
providing other means for exchange of information on management research and teaching among associations of scholars throughout the world and |
· |
encouraging the establishment of national associations of scholars of management |
At the moment IFSAM is a federative organization formed by its member academies. It is well known for its bi-annual conferences (The last conference that was held in September 2006 in Berlin, Germany in co-operation with VHB, Association of University Professors of Management. In 2008 the conference will be held from July 26th–28th in Shanghai, China in co-operation with CAMS, China Academy of Management Science and CNEMA, Chinese National Economic Management Association. In 2004 the conference was held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in co-operation with SAM, Scandinavian Academy of Management).
IFSAM is also known for the yearly council meetings, where issues of common interest are discussed and acted upon. (The last council meeting took place in Osaka, Japan in co-operation with JSBA; in 2006 the meeting took place before the bi-annual conference in Berlin, Germany in co-operation with VHB).
(Inter)National Academies of Management can become full members of IFSAM: The voting membership of IFSAM shall consist of established national associations or possibly a federation of national associations whose primary objective is the advancement of research and teaching of management.
At the moment the full membership fee is USD 1,250 per year.
There is also a possibility to become an associate member (mainly aimed at developing associations with the intention to become a full member in the future) and an institutional member. Those associations interested in becoming (full, associate or institutional) member of IFSAM are requested to contact the secretariat or the secretary of IFSAM (see below for contact adresses).
One of the main strengths of IFSAM is that it takes into account the ‘state of the art’ of research and teaching in management in a specific country in such a way that one can learn from each other. One of the strategic aims of IFSAM is to provide several means, rules, and benchmarks for this possible learning in such a way that these are helpful for the learning process of all IFSAM members.
Two examples of the aim described above:
· |
Every bi-annual IFSAM conference has specific sessions with respect to this aim. For instance, in Australia, there was a special session with respect to accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS): benchmarking business schools. Also, a strategy session for academies of management can take place at an IFSAM conference. |
· |
The executive of IFSAM will propose minimum criteria for a recognized full member of IFSAM at the next council meeting. These criteria aimed at setting a benchmark for national academies of management. |
At the moment, IFSAM is an organization striving to become (a sort of) UN for academies of management in the world. IFSAM aims at providing help, setting standards, and encouraging development of research and education in management in the world. IFSAM also aims to increase its number of member academies in the world. As a step towards achieving that aim IFSAM, of course, encourages all academies of management (or even academies to be) to become a (full, associate) member of IFSAM.
